On the morning of October 10, in response to recent media reports regarding the net weight of EAST BUY frozen shrimp, EAST BUY issued a "Statement Regarding the Net Weight of EAST BUY Frozen Shrimp" on the evening of October 9. The full statement is as follows: A video raised questions about the net weight of EAST BUY frozen shrimp. We attach great importance to this matter and immediately launched an investigation. To avoid causing misunderstanding among the public, the investigation results are explained below: 1. EAST BUY frozen shrimp is a pre-packaged food, and the net weight measurement inspection for such products must be carried out in accordance with JJF 1070-2023 "Rules for the Measurement Inspection of Net Content of Pre-packaged Goods" (hereinafter referred to as the "Rules").
2. The Rules clearly state that the thawing method for measurement inspection is "running water thawing," and that "thawing the product is not the goal; it is only to remove excess ice. The product itself must remain in a frozen state to prevent the loss of moisture naturally present in the product."
3. The "natural thawing" weighing method used in the video is inconsistent with the measurement testing standards required by current regulations. Moreover, the shrimp in the video not only had the ice coating removed but were also completely thawed, with moisture inside the shrimp drained out, which is inconsistent with the Rules' requirement that "the product itself must remain in a frozen state," resulting in deviation in the weighing results. EAST BUY frozen shrimp does not use water-retaining agents during production, and in a completely thawed state, moisture inside the shrimp is more prone to loss.
4. During the production of EAST BUY frozen shrimp products, quality control personnel accompany production and conduct random inspections of net weight. Each batch of products is also randomly inspected before leaving the factory, and routine third-party testing is also arranged. All of the above inspections have confirmed that net weight meets standards. Thank you for your attention. We will continue to use strict quality control standards to provide consumers with high-quality products.
Recently, some media conducted actual measurements on frozen shrimp sold by the e-commerce platform EAST BUY, purchasing 3 bags of products labeled with a net content of 1,000 grams (two bags containing 5 small packets each, and one bag containing 10 small packets). According to the "Measures for the Supervision and Administration of the Measurement of Pre-packaged Goods," a 1,000-gram package is allowed a shortfall of 1.5%, or 15 grams, and the net content after thawing and draining must not be less than 985 grams. Using the natural thawing method to weigh separately, the measured net contents of the two 5-small-packet samples were 986.9 grams and 995.7 grams respectively, within the allowable range; while the 10-small-packet sample measured only 963.5 grams, which, after deducting the allowable shortfall, still fell short by 21.5 grams.
