On October 8, GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. rose 5.7% in regular trading, trading at $50.8235 per share with turnover of $130 million. The move was driven by news that the company signed a $2 billion silicon interposer supply agreement with TSMC, with an initial term of five years, to support advanced AI packaging.

Under the agreement, GlobalFoundries will expand capacity at its Malta, New York facility to manufacture silicon interposers for TSMC's CoWoS advanced packaging process. Silicon interposers are thin layers of silicon between the chip and packaging substrate that handle data, power, and signal transmission. The deal marks a significant expansion of GlobalFoundries' role in the AI supply chain, following its earlier partnership with Marvell Technology to increase silicon germanium capacity in Vermont and a $375 million CHIPS R&D award announced in September.
